Precognitive Souls

SYNOPSIS

Max Quinn, a biracial woman who passes for white, lives an otherwise quiet life, masking a deeply unsettling secret—she experiences flashes of precognition. These visions have always felt more like a haunting than a gift, leaving her isolated, anxious, and exhausted by an ability she struggles to control. Unbeknownst to her, the visions are tied to a trauma buried even deeper than she realizes—a twin brother she never knew she had.

When a series of ritualistic murders begins to unfold, Max’s fragile stability unravels. Victims connected to her orbit start to appear, and her visions intensify with disturbing specificity. The investigation is led by Detective Miles Corbin, an African American detective haunted by his own past and personal failures. Initially skeptical of Max’s abilities, Corbin becomes her reluctant partner as the case grows stranger and more personal.

The killer—Julian Thorne—is Max’s long-lost twin, also biracial but visually presenting more Black, which tragically shaped his life. After their birth, societal and racial biases led to their separation: Max, lighter-skinned, was adopted into a stable life; Julian, darker-skinned, was cast into a brutal foster care system and ultimately into the abusive hands of a church that masked predation as salvation. This twisted upbringing forged Julian into a killer whose murders are ritualistic acts designed to reconnect him with Max through shared trauma. For Julian, each victim represents an offering to the Akashic Record—a mystical plane of collective consciousness—through which he believes he can rewrite his fate.

As Max and Corbin close in, Max’s visions become clearer, guiding her toward suppressed memories of her own identity and her twin. The investigation leads them to Sister Maria, who had tried to protect Julian long ago, revealing the deeply buried secret: Max and Julian’s true connection as siblings.

The climax unfolds at Mills Reservoir, where Julian stages a chilling final ritual with Max as his intended final offering. Here, their confrontation peels away the lies they’ve both lived with. In a deeply personal exchange, Max acknowledges the subtle racial discomfort she felt growing up—darkening in the summer while her white relatives remained pale—realizing how privilege allowed her to escape while Julian was condemned simply by appearance.

Julian, driven by his fractured identity and desperate longing for familial connection, ultimately releases Max and sacrifices himself—symbolically choosing to vanish into the “Record” rather than take another life. However, his death remains ambiguous, leaving open whether he truly perished or transcended into something else.

In the resolution, Max finds peace in embracing the parts of herself she had denied. For the first time, she commits to learning who she truly is—not defined by her gift, nor by the shadows of her past, but by an integrated self that acknowledges her full, complicated identity.
